![]() ![]() ![]() The absurdity of Western society is demonstrated in one timely symbol. Her time in Germany strengthens her contribution back home, but only because she decided to leave Germany behind to come home. She departs from her community, from the land she knows well, into a new place in which she is tested for her abilities to adapt and survive alone, without the support of her community. In the end of the novel, Sissie finds her way back to Africa, which means that the setting of this novel is a metaphor for the unknown, because Sissie's story is clearly a hero's journey. Marija gives her a familial love with full loyalty, for free, before they even really know each other, and she teaches Sissie how to succeed in Germany. She realizes that she is alone in a more precise, technical way than she has ever been alone before, and then as if as a response to her waning hope, she meets Marija. Suddenly, Sissie needs help, but she doesn't have her village around her to help her. Marija functions in the archetypal role of the savior, because she is like a deus ex machina in Sissie's life.
